Our Staff


Robert was born and raised in the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles and is the founder and CEO of LEARN.  Robert is a third generation Angeleno and first-generation college graduate, having earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Ethnic Studies and Geography with an Urban/Economic Emphasis from UC Berkeley, followed by a Master’s in Education from UC Santa Barbara.  Robert’s classroom experience has been varied starting as an elementary school and high school teacher, to teaching education seminars in community education for new teachers who would be entering classrooms in low-income underserved areas for Teach For America Institutes at USC, Cal State Northridge and at UCLA. He has also worked at educational non-profits, foundations and youth and family agencies to help create what he calls a “culture of learning” among the families that he has had the honor to serve. Robert has 27 years of combined experience as a teacher, youth and family program manager, non-profit director and fund developer. Robert enjoys travel, running and spending time with his two daughters.



Brenda, a first-generation college graduate and a daughter of immigrant farm workers, was born and raised in the Coachella Valley. While at Occidental College, Brenda worked for the GEAR UP program at Washington Irving Middle School in LAUSD. After graduating from Occidental with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Brenda worked to coordinate middle and high school youth services for the GEAR UP program at Cal State LA. Before becoming one of the founders of LEARN, Brenda worked as the Manager of Community Programs for the California Science Center’s Amgen Center for Science Learning where she worked to provide educational science programming for both students and teachers.  In her current role, Brenda continues to promote lifelong learning and prepare underserved youth in the Los Angeles area for success in college and career. Brenda enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, camping, hiking, and running.



Leslie was raised in Arizona and left her home state to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with a Minor in Spanish from Whittier College.  She is currently working towards her Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership.  She has worked for LEARN since 2006, having the experience of working in several capacities. She has worked as a GEAR UP tutor, ASPIRE youth leader, ASPIRE Site Coordinator, and PREP Site Coordinator. Her breadth of experience in these capacities has positioned her to make a big impact in the lives of youth through her current role overseeing the operations of LEARN after school programs. Leslie enjoys spending time with her family, as well as music, travel, yoga, board games, and scuba diving.


David comes to LEARN after many years as a teacher, professor, coach, counselor and administrator in K-16 education. He earned his BA at UC Berkeley and his MA from Columbia University in New York City. Along his journey, he was also a visiting scholar at Cambridge University in England as well as at MIT. In his free time, he and his wife love to travel, attend concerts and plays, and most of all, root for their beloved Dodgers. David is proud to be working for LEARN as he believes its mission and core values reflect a strong and effective organization.




Anna holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Maryknoll College.  Prior to joining LEARN, Anna worked in the hotel industry for over 20 years in the Accounting Division.  Anna enjoys going for long drives, reading books, browsing the internet, and watching Food Network and home improvement shows on TV.


Sylvia is a native Angeleno with a passion for helping young people achieve their highest potential.  She left LA to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from UC Santa Cruz and returned to serve her community as a Tutor, Instructional Aide, Teacher and Tutoring Program Coordinator.  She currently works to make an impact in young lives by overseeing LEARN’s Social Enterprises Emmy Doo’s Ice Cream Shop and the SES Tutoring Program.  Sylvia enjoys reading, traveling and being outdoors.



Roberto holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management. Prior to joining the team at LEARN, Roberto’s work experience was in the banking and hospitality industries. Roberto’s personal interests include participating in family activities, Golf Junior Tours with his daughter, and automotive technology.


Grecia was raised in the El Monte community LEARN serves and is currently working towards her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration at Cal Poly Pomona. Driven by a passion to give back to her community, she started working for LEARN as a Youth Leader in our PREP high school after school program in El Monte in 2008 before assuming her current role.  Grecia enjoys leading an active lifestyle and trains for and participates in Obstacle Course Races.
